What to know about off-site sales events

| Consumer bulletins

Did you hear about a special vehicle sales event held in a parking lot? When an automotive business or group of businesses holds a sale in a location other than their automotive business, it’s called an off-site sale. Automotive businesses or groups of businesses can hold off-site sales events if they notify AMVIC in advance. These events can often feel exciting, but it’s important to make informed purchase decisions.

Before you go
If you’re planning on attending an off-site sales event, check to see if the event is listed on AMVIC Online. You can also check to see if a salesperson, even if they are from a third-party promotional company, is registered and authorized to act on behalf of the business. All salespeople at the event must be actively registered with an issued status for the entire duration of the sales event.

Advertising
Off-site sales event advertising and vehicle advertising must still follow all applicable legislation, including all-in advertised pricing.

An advertised price of a vehicle must include all fees and costs the automotive business intends to charge. The only fees that can be added to the advertised price are GST and any costs or charges associated with financing. Take a copy of the advertisement with you to ensure the price on the bill of sale matches the advertised price.

Read before you sign
Get all promises, and clarification on terms and conditions in writing. Ask for and review the bill of sale to make sure all information is correct and complete before signing it. Remember, there is no “cooling off” period—once you sign a bill of sale, you have purchased a vehicle. AMVIC has new and used vehicle purchase guides to help you through the process, available in 10 languages.
