Service and repair: maintaining up-to-date technician records

| Industry bulletins

AMVIC has observed that several service and repair businesses have not kept their trade certificate information up-to-date on their AMVIC Online business profiles. All licensed automotive businesses in Alberta are required to maintain accurate and current information on their AMVIC Online profile.

As an employer, you are responsible for ensuring your journeypersons, apprentices and other staff are properly trained in their respective roles. If untrained employees perform the duties of certified tradespeople, you may be held accountable for their actions, including under the principle of vicarious liability.

Depending on the repair activities offered, you must provide a copy of one or more trade certificates per individual when adding services or updating staff members. The certificate(s) must be in the following trades:

  • Automotive service technician
  • Heavy equipment technician
  • Autobody technician
  • Recreation vehicle service technician.

You can reference the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training website for certificate requirements. A comprehensive list of all automotive repair activities and certificates required can be found here.

Under Section 166 of the Consumer Protection Act, all automotive businesses are responsible for the conduct of their employees. Keeping your AMVIC documentation accurate and up-to-date is essential to ensure the correct information is recorded—helping protect consumers, your staff and your business.
