No matter what business you’re in, good record-keeping is important. AMVIC requires all licensed automotive businesses in Alberta, including those in the service and repair industry, to provide accurate, up-to-date information on their AMVIC Online profile.
As an employer, it’s your responsibility to ensure your journeypersons, apprentices and other staff are properly trained in their respective fields. If you have untrained staff members performing duties of certified tradespeople, you can be held responsible for employee conduct (vicarious liability).
Depending on the repair activities offered, you must provide a copy of one or more trade certificates per person when adding services or updating staff members. The certificate(s) must be in the following trades:
- Automotive service technician;
- Heavy equipment technician;
- Autobody technician; or
- Recreation vehicle service technician.
You can reference the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training website for certificate requirements or see a comprehensive list of all automotive repair activities and certificates required on the AMVIC website.
Remember, all automotive businesses are responsible for the conduct of the staff members they employ under the Consumer Protection Act, Section 166. AMVIC document accuracy is critical to ensure the right information is being recorded, which in turn will protect the consumer, your staff members and your business.
