Red flags to watch for when vehicle shopping

| Consumer bulletins

Thinking of buying a vehicle this year? Whether you’re looking to buy new or used, it’s important you know your rights as a consumer and any red flags to watch for when vehicle shopping.

Beware of curbers

If you decide to buy a vehicle, make sure the automotive business you’re dealing with is AMVIC-licensed by looking them up on amvic.org. Automotive businesses in Alberta must follow the consumer protection rules set out in Alberta’s Consumer Protection Act.

An illegal, unlicensed vehicle seller is commonly called a curber. Typically, curbers sell vehicles with hidden damage, tampered odometers or mechanical issues. Visit AMVIC’s website to learn more about curbers and how to spot and report them.

Take your time before you buy

As a consumer, you should never feel rushed or pressured into buying a vehicle. After you’ve done your research and decided on the vehicle you want to buy, take these precautions before you sign on the dotted line:

  • Ask questions and make informed decisions.
  • Read every word in a document. If it requires a signature, it’s important!
  • Get all promises and any clarification on terms and conditions and price in writing.
  • Review your bill of sale to ensure all information is accurate and complete.

Watch for extra fees

In Alberta, all-in advertised pricing is the law. This means when an AMVIC-licensed seller advertises the price of a vehicle, the price must include ALL fees and charges the seller intends to charge. The only fee that can be added to the advertised price is GST and any costs or charges associated with financing.

No consumer should ever be forced to agree to extra fees, additional equipment or services they don’t want. If you, as a consumer, are unable to negotiate removing those fees, walk away from the deal.
