March is Fraud Prevention Month and AMVIC is once again joining the Fraud Prevention Forum and other partner organizations to raise awareness on fraud, and educate consumers and industry on how to recognize, reject and report fraud.
While there is a big focus on fraud prevention this month, it’s important to look out for yourself and be aware of fraud, in all its forms, year-round.
Know your rights
As a consumer in Alberta, you have rights. Visit amvic.org for free, easy to use resources to keep you informed. Be sure to check out AMVIC’s consumer guides on buying a new vehicle, buying a used vehicle, and servicing and repairing a vehicle, available in 10 languages.
Recognize curbers and backyard mechanics
Automotive businesses (including service and repair shops) must be licensed, and salespeople must be registered with AMVIC. Make sure you know what curbers and backyard mechanics are, and how to avoid and report them. You can verify a business licence or salesperson registration by using AMVIC’s online database.
Ensure all documents are accurate
Document accuracy protects you and ensures the correct information is being recorded, including on bills of sale or financing applications. Always double check documents before signing them to make sure everything is accurate. This can include your personal information on finance documents, including, but not limited to your stated income, number of years at your residence or job and driver’s licence number. If any information is misrepresented on forms or contracts, you could get into serious financial trouble. Learn more about understanding your bill of sale and contracts on amvic.org.
