AMVIC does not regulate ATVs, motorcycles or off-road vehicles

| Consumer bulletins

AMVIC is Alberta’s automotive industry regulator and has the authority to look into automotive businesses and salespeople for breaches of the legislation that AMVIC enforces.

As a reminder, AMVIC can look into consumer complaints involving:

  • New and used vehicle sales (including consignment),
  • Vehicle repairs,
  • Unlicensed businesses (curbers and backyard mechanics),
  • Advertising,
  • Legislated codes of conduct, and
  • Refundable deposits.

There are, however, limitations to what AMVIC regulates in Alberta’s automotive industry. AMVIC does not regulate all terrain vehicles (ATVs), motorcycles or any off-road vehicles. This means that if you have a concern with your ATV, motorcycle or off-road vehicle, you need to take another route. In Alberta, ATVs, motorcycles and off-road vehicles are regulated by a shared group of provincial ministries, law enforcement agencies and local municipalities.

If you have a concern with an automotive or service and repair business in Alberta, you can file a complaint on AMVIC Online.  Alternatively, you can file a complaint anonymously by contacting AMVIC’s partner, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Visit amvic.org for more information on filing a consumer complaint.
