First time buyers can sometimes feel overwhelmed with the vehicle purchasing process. With so many different options out there, it’s important not to make any rushed decisions when it comes to buying your first vehicle.
If you decide to purchase a vehicle, make sure the automotive business you are dealing with is AMVIC-licensed by looking them up on amvic.org. Automotive businesses in Alberta must follow the consumer protection rules set out in Alberta’s Consumer Protection Act.
Needs, wants and budget
Start your buying process by setting a budget. Consider all possible costs associated with a vehicle purchase including the total cost of the vehicle, maintenance and insurance. Many consumers can’t pay cash for a vehicle and instead choose to finance. A longer term loan as opposed to a shorter term loan may allow access to a more expensive vehicle, but consider whether the total price of the vehicle, including cost of credit, is truly affordable.
Once you’ve decided how much you’re willing to spend, research what type of vehicle meets your needs. Do you need a two-door or four-door? Do you need a pickup truck, SUV or small car? Are you going to buy new or used?
Be prepared with AMVIC consumer guides
Whatever you’re considering buying, AMVIC has free, helpful resources to get you started including easy to use consumer guides. AMVIC even has three consumer guides available in 10 different languages to help new Albertans when purchasing, servicing or repairing a vehicle.
AMVIC is here to help you before, during and after a vehicle purchase. Go to amvic.org for more information on topics like all-in advertised pricing, no “cooling off” period and reading before you sign.
