Service and repair: know what you’re signing

| Consumer bulletins

With many digital options available, it can be easier to get the information you need, right at your fingertips. To improve convenience for vehicle consumers, automotive businesses have started using mobile apps to provide service and repair estimates and work orders.

Whether you’re clicking through screens or scanning over paperwork, it’s important that you take time to review documents carefully when it comes to service and repair estimates, and authorizations.

Before you hand over the keys:

  • Get a written estimate and all promises in writing.
    • Remember, a service and repair business is only required to provide an estimate when asked, and the total can only exceed the estimate by 10 per cent to a maximum of $100.
  • For larger repair jobs, compare prices with other repair shops.
  • Keep copies of all documents you’re given, including digital ones.
  • Ask about manufacturer, supplier or other warranty information and get all warranty documents in writing.
  • Inquire about additional fees and charges that may apply, and how much they cost.
  • Always ask questions if you’re unsure or don’t understand what you’re agreeing to.
