Online advertising compliance

| Industry bulletins

Car buying is evolving as consumers increasingly turn to online tools and virtual showrooms to research and compare vehicles before walking into a showroom. As an automotive business, keeping up with these changes is important. Adding online tools such as social media, virtual showrooms or digital marketing strategies may come with their challenges. As such, advertising compliance is imperative.

To help businesses ensure advertising compliance, AMVIC has created an advertising toolkit on amvic.org which includes:

  • Advertising guides, checklists and a social media advertising FAQ.
  • The advertising modules from the Salesperson Registration Course and the Service and Repair Course, available at no cost.
  • AMVIC logos in a variety of formats.
  • A range of sample advertisements.

Familiarize yourself with the Internet Sales Contract Regulation to know the requirements you must meet to be able to sell vehicles online. Check your online advertisements to make sure they comply with the Automotive Business Regulation’s Section 31.1(2)(a) and (b), which list a number of vehicle history disclosure requirements that must be included on your online advertisements.

If your online advertisement offers credit, states the interest rate or payment amount make sure those advertisements comply with the Cost of Credit Disclosure Regulation. If you are advertising used vehicles, ensure you include the required vehicle history information.

Remember that you are responsible for your advertisements. Visit amvic.org for more helpful resources for your business.

Please note that as of 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 22, 2023, AMVIC operations, including emails and calls, will be paused for the holiday season, resuming at 8 a.m. on Jan. 2, 2024.
