AMVIC is a free and trusted consumer resource. Whether you’re a seasoned car-buyer or getting your first vehicle, we have helpful tips for automotive consumers in Alberta.
- Read before you sign.
Get all promises, and clarification on terms and conditions in writing. Ask for and review the bill of sale to make sure all information is correct and complete before signing it. AMVIC has new and used vehicle purchase guides to help you through the process, available in 10 languages. - All-in advertised pricing is the law.
An advertised price of a vehicle must include all fees and costs the automotive business intends to charge. The only fees that can be added to the advertised price are GST and any costs or charges associated with financing. Take a copy of the advertisement with you to ensure the price on the bill of sale matches the advertised price. - Pause before handing over a deposit.
Always have a written sales agreement before paying a deposit. Make sure the agreement clearly states whether the deposit is refundable or non-refundable, and under what terms and conditions. Remember, a deposit agreement is not a bill of sale. - There is no “cooling off” period.
Once you sign the contract, you’ve contractually agreed to buy it and the vehicle is yours. Stop shopping after you sign a purchase contract. - Know the service and repair laws.
Did you know you must agree to any additional costs before any service or repair work is started on your vehicle? AMVIC has a handy two-page service and repair consumer guide for you to reference, available in 10 languages.
