You must get
a provincial licence from AMVIC if
you buy, sell, lease, repair or
maintain cars, trucks (all types) or
recreation vehicles (motorized
only) in Alberta. This includes:
» New, used, wholesale,
agent/broker or consignment sales.
» Body shops, garages, specialty
service and repair, mobile service
and repair.
» Leasing.
Contact your
local municipal government office to
see if you also need a municipal
licence.
Q. What are
the fees?
The approved
annual fee schedule, which took
effect May 17, 2004 are:
»
Single business activity (e.g. sales
only) = $175 per year
» Multiple business activity
(e.g. sales & repair) = $350 per year
» Salesperson registration =
$100
Q. Who
determined the fees?
The Minister
of Service Alberta is
authorized by regulation to set assessment fees to be collected by
regulatory bodies like AMVIC.
Q. Do
businesses have to renew their
licence right away?
All General
Automotive Business Licenses that
expired on or before June 30, 2000
were required to apply for a new
business licence from AMVIC prior to
July 1, 2000. Five-year provincial
licenses issued before May 1, 1999
continue to be valid until the date
of expiration. However, those
licenses will now be administered by
AMVIC.
Q. Will
licenses still be five year licenses?
No.
Businesses without a valid five-year
provincial licence are required to
renew their licence every year.
Q. What
about salespeople?
Salespeople have been required to be
registered with AMVIC since July 1,
2000. A salesperson is required to
submit their registration form and
non-refundable fee of $100, new fees
effective May 17, 2004.As per government
regulations, all salesperson
registrations will have an effective
date of July 1, 2000. They will need
to renew their registration every
year.
A
salesperson must register new or
additional employers with AMVIC and
have the employer complete and submit
a designated agent authorization
form. This must be done before a
salesperson can sell vehicles for the
new employer.
Q. Why
register salespeople?
The industry
believes this is a long overdue
step. Such registration would
increase salespeople’s knowledge
about the provincial regulations,
reduce unethical behavior, and
increase consumer protection. The
Southern Alberta Institute of
Technology has been contracted by
AMVIC to help develop an educational
program for automotive salespeople.
Q. What will
the salesperson program look like?
It will be a
one-day seminar that will focus on
the Fair Trading Act and new
regulations affecting the automotive
industry
and consumer protection.
Q. Will all
salespeople have to take the course?
Yes. All
salespeople must attend the
educational seminar within a certain
period of time as part of their
registration. The seminar will be
offered in a variety of locations in
Alberta. Salespeople will receive a
provisional registration until they
have had an opportunity to attend the
seminar.
Q. What do I
need to apply or qualify for a
licence?
Fill out the
application form AMVIC sends to you.
Submit with
the application:
» Municipal approval
» Trade certificate
» If applicable, a designated
agent authorization form for each
salesperson selling vehicles for your
business.
Q. What if
my business changes. Do I need a new
licence?
A new
licence is required if:
» The ownership or business
location changes.
» The service offered by the
business changes (e.g. a repair
business now wants to sell vehicles)
Your licence
will still be valid if the changes
involve:
» mailing address or other
contact information (e.g. phone/fax)
» trade name
