AMVIC licenses approximately 7,000 motor vehicle businesses and registers more than 9,000 salespeople.

AMVIC is responsible for administering and enforcing automotive industry regulations under Alberta’s Fair Trading Act. This includes ensuring advertising rules are followed, mechanical fitness assessments are issued and licensing requirements are clear.

All automotive businesses in Alberta are required to be licensed by AMVIC and all vehicle salespeople must by registered by AMVIC.

As the automotive industry regulator AMVIC:

  • Levels the playing field among businesses through education and enforcement of consumer protection laws.
  • Builds consumer trust and confidence in the motor vehicle industry.
  • Communicates the benefits of buying from licensed businesses.
  • Provides an alternative to litigation through alternate dispute resolution of consumer complaints.
