AMVIC impersonator attending automotive dealerships

Edmonton— AMVIC is alerting all Alberta automotive businesses about an individual falsely claiming to be an AMVIC representative. AMVIC was recently notified by multiple licensees that they were targeted by an AMVIC impersonator.

In one known instance, an individual attended an automotive business falsely claiming to be an inspector. Throughout the conversation, the individual changed from allegedly being a brand manufacturer inspector to an AMVIC industry standards officer and finally an Alberta Transportation inspector. AMVIC has notified police and would like to remind businesses to remain vigilant regarding anyone claiming to be an AMVIC investigator or industry standards officer.

“Our staff operate with the utmost professionalism and integrity according to our code of ethics,” Doug Lagore, AMVIC CEO said. “Impersonation is a serious offence and AMVIC encourages anyone encountering someone impersonating an AMVIC employee to contact us immediately.”

To verify the identity of an AMVIC employee, ask them to produce their AMVIC identification:

  • AMVIC industry standards officers should have an AMVIC photo ID and a business card with their name on it.
  • AMVIC investigators should have an Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council peace officer badge and a Solicitor General Peace Officer photo ID card.
  • If you still have concerns, contact AMVIC directly to verify if they are who they claim to be at 1-877-979-8100.
  • Never share personal or business related information unless you are certain you are dealing with someone who has the authority to collect that information.

“I want to thank the dealers who brought this to our attention,” said Lagore. “Behavior such as this puts consumers and businesses at risk and it will not be tolerated.”
