AMVIC'S STRUCTURE

On September 1, 1999, the Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council (AMVIC) assumed responsibility from the provincial government for administering and enforcing automotive industry regulations under Alberta’s Fair Trading Act. The Fair Trading Act, which came into effect September 1, 1999, includes an Automotive Business Regulation  that pertains specifically to the motor vehicle industry and the authority under which AMVIC operates.

The decision to delegate regulatory authority to a self-managed industry council came about as a result of two years of consultation with industry and consumers.  AMVIC’s goals include:

bullet

Provide a level playing field and fair marketplace for both consumers and businesses.

bullet

Make a good industry better by:
bullet

reducing the number of people involved in illegal or questionable business practices

bullet

providing education, training and consumer satisfaction supports to legitimate automotive businesses and salespeople

bullet

enhancing the professional image of people involved in the motor vehicle industry.

bullet

Strengthen consumer protection by:
bullet

setting common standards for all businesses and salespeople

bullet

increasing investigation and enforcement activities

bullet

establishing an industry-funded Compensation Fund

Businesses that are involved in the buying, selling, or leasing, repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, or recreation vehicles in Alberta must be licensed by AMVIC.  Businesses that sell motor vehicles must employ salespersons that are registered by AMVIC. Anyone who solicits, negotiates, or closes the sale or lease of a vehicle in Alberta is considered an automotive salesperson.
